Stop motion is an animation technique to make a physically manipulated object appear to move on its own. The object is moved in small increments between individually photographed frames, creating the illusion of movement when the series of frames is played as a continuous sequence.
History
The first animations were created by Albert E. Smith and J. Stuart Blackton who were the creators of The humpty Dumpty circus, where a toy circus comes to life. This is an example of how animations were around a 100 years ago and another example is The Haunted Hotel which was created in 1907.
Other than making narratives using stop motion people just made general patterns, an early way of doing this would of being using a zoetrope
The zoetrope is a device that produces an illusion of action from a rapid movement of pictures. it consists of a cylinder of vertically cut slits in the side in which spins as the user looks through the slits to see the opposite side of the inside of the cylinder to create an image.
here is an example:
As time went on, stop motions became more and more fascinating and could be eventually developed into actual movies. during the 1970s, animator Eliot Noyes jr., an independant clay animator refined the technique "free form" and went on to take part in the oscar winning film The Sand Castle which was created by Co hoedeman.
A modern film animator today called Tim Burton has created two award winning animation films called The Nightmare Before Christmas and Corpse Bride. These are not typical animations as because the camera moves during the movie but this kind of gives the film more entertainment and vision towards the narrative which is taking place.
Here are few more examples of modern animation:
Aardman animations are a production company that make TV and film animation. They are known from their use of the clay stop motion technique, they were the first ones to make an animation using clay, that being chicken run and they have made a television series of shawn the sheep and they are more particually known for their huge production wallace and gromit. They have recently joined forces with dreamworks to beable to make CGI and have brought out a film.
